Decorative contact lenses can change your eyes colour or complete a Halloween costume but  are medical devices - not costume accessories. Proper fitting, handling, and care are essential to prevent eye irritation, corneal scratches, and infection.

What Are Halloween Contact Lenses?

Halloween contact lenses are decorative lenses designed to change the appearance of your eyes. Popular designs include:

  • Black or white eyes

  • Cat eyes or unusual pupil shapes

  • Red or bloodshot effects

  • Fantasy designs

  • Different eye colours

Even when they do not correct vision, decorative lenses sit directly on the eye and require proper fitting. In Canada, they are regulated as medical devices.

Are Halloween Contact Lenses Safe?

Decorative contact lenses are safe when they are properly fitted and cared for. Poorly fitting lenses can cause discomfort, reduce oxygen reaching the cornea, and damage the eye surface.

Purchase lenses only from a legitimate source. Avoid unknown websites, costume shops, social media sellers, or products with unclear packaging or unknown manufacturers.

What Are the Risks?

Improper contact lens use can lead to:

  • Eye irritation: Redness, dryness, discomfort, and a foreign-body sensation

  • Corneal scratches: Damage to the clear surface of the eye

  • Eye infection: Infections that require prompt treatment

  • Corneal ulcers: Open sores on the cornea that can cause pain and vision changes

  • Vision loss: Severe infection or corneal damage can permanently affect vision

You do not need a glass prescription to require proper fitting for cosmetic contact lenses.

How to Wear Halloween Contacts Safely

1. Get an eye examination and contact lens fitting. An optometrist can assess your eye health and ensure the lenses fit properly

2. Buy from a legitimate source.Avoid cheap or unverified decorative lenses from unknown sellers.

3. Wash and dry your hands.Always clean your hands before touching your lenses or eyes.

4. Follow the recommended wearing schedule.Do not wear lenses longer than directed.

5. Never sleep in contacts.Remove lenses before sleeping unless specifically prescribed for overnight wear.

6. Use the correct contact lens solution.Never clean or store lenses in tap water or saliva.

7. Never share contact lenses.Sharing can transfer harmful microorganisms between users.

8. Do Not Use Damaged or Expired Lenses

Discard lenses that are torn, damaged, expired, or contaminated.

Halloween Makeup and Contact Lenses

If you wear both makeup and contact lenses, insert your contacts before applying eye makeup. Remove your contacts before removing makeup.

Keep glitter, eyeliner, false-eyelash adhesive, and other cosmetics away from the eye and lens surface

When Should You Remove Your Contacts?

Remove the lenses immediately if you experience:

  • Eye pain

  • Significant redness

  • Blurred vision

  • Light sensitivity

  • Excessive watering

  • Discharge

  • Swelling

  • Persistent irritation

If symptoms continue after removing the lenses, seek prompt eye care.

Eye pain and vision changes are not normal contact lens symptoms.
