How to keep my children's eyes healthy? | A Parent's Guide

Our children rely on their vision for almost every activity they engage in, from reading and writing to playing sports and exploring the world around them. Good vision is essential for their learning and development. Here's what I've learned about keeping our kids' eyes healthy and safe.

Routine Eye Exams: A Must

The American Optometric Association recommends that children have their first eye exam at six months, another at three years, and then yearly starting at school age. These exams can help identify any vision problems early on, ensuring that any necessary corrective measures are taken promptly.

Eye Safety at Home

  • Ensure that toys and games are age-appropriate and do not have sharp edges. Keep hazardous chemicals out of reach, and use safety gates to prevent falls.

  • Encourage the use of protective eyewear during sports and recreational activities.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to screens that can lead to digital eye strain. So encourage frequent breaks using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.

  • Protect your child’s eyes from harmful UV rays by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays when they are outside.

Promote Healthy Lifestyle

A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables can significantly contribute to eye health. Foods high in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, and omega-3 fatty acids are particularly beneficial. Including foods like carrots, spinach, fish, and nuts in your child's diet can help maintain good vision.

As parent’s, we are always on the lookout for ways to ensure our kids stay healthy and safe. With August being Children's Eye Health and Safety Month, it’s the perfect time to focus on our children’s vision, a critical aspect of their overall health.

Remember, healthy vision today paves the way for a brighter, clearer future for our little ones. Want to learn more on how to protect your children’s vision? Talk to your eye doctor!
