Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Program

After a brain injury (examples include head trauma, stroke, tumor, or neurological disease), patients may suffer visual symptoms that do not go away.
These symptoms may be overlooked, or may appear days, or even weeks, after the initial trauma.

Neuro-optometric rehabilitation is a prescribed treatment using light therapy, specialized lenses including prisms, and activities designed to improve visual skills including eye teaming, focusing, eye movements, and visual perceptual skills.

Under the supervision of a vision care professional, a customized treatment plan is developed based on an individual’s specific needs. The program involves both in-office and at-home treatment and regular progress check evaluations.

** Length of assessment and therapy programs will vary depending on the conditions being treated.

Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation is conducted in-office once a week for 45 minutes; at-home therapy is also assigned to be conducted on a daily basis.

Our weekly clinic sessions involve different eye exercises with various types of lenses, prisms, filters and patches to help restore visual skills and relieve visual symptoms.

Depending on the severity of the visual symptoms and the patient’s needs and goals; the duration of the program will vary.

Throughout the therapy program, progress evaluations will be completed during the sessions. This will help track the level of improvement so we can maintain an effective therapy plan.

After completion of the program, maintenance home therapy exercises will be assigned.

The patient will be scheduled for a 3 to 6 month post therapy follow-up evaluation to ensure that the improvements made through the program are maintained.

OUR MISSION

Is to provide the highest quality vision care and to help our patients’ eyes stay healthy for life.

DID YOU KNOW?

90% of traumatic brain injuries result in some form of visual impairment

Studies show more than 50%

of patients with a Traumatic Brain Injury suffer from visual complications

After the initial consultation, our doctor can assign a specific diagnostic code to individual visual conditions. This aids in insurance coverage determination.

Each insurance company offers various coverage and benefit packages. It’s advisable to contact them regarding your coverage and benefits after your consultation.

In case of involvement in a motor vehicle accident leading to visual issues, our office can assist in the approval process. We will complete the OCF-18 form, and the office will handle the approval request for the program along with other necessary materials and follow-up care.

It’s important to note that OHIP does not cover these programs for any age group.
